Snow

Few countries the size of England can have such different weather according to whereabouts you live. The sight of snow may be nothing unusual to folk in Kent or Cumbria but on Merseyside it is rare and since the 1960s I can only think of a couple of winters which have had any depth of snow and most recent ones have had none at all.

These photos were taken in February 1969 in Calderstones Park and it was not unusual in the 1960s for sledges to be in use for days or weeks on end. The deepest and longest periods of snow I can recall were the winters of 1962/3 and 1963/4, two winters which played havoc with the bird-life right across the country as millions of small birds froze to death.
